General Questions
Q1: What is CVGS?
A1: CVGS (Connectix Virtual Game Station) is a commercially available emulator for MAC and Windows, which emulates the PSX in software mode only.  This means it contains no graphical improvements over the real PSX, but has the best compatibility.

Q2: Is CVGS free and where can I download it?
A2: CVGS is NOT free.  You actually have to pay for this one, so check your local video game retail store or online to buy it.  For more info visit  http://www.connectix.com/products/cvgs.html

You can also get a free DEMO at http://www.psproms.com

Q3: Does CVGS work under Windows 2000?
A3: No, currently CVGS doesnt work with Windows 2000.

Q4: How do I run in window mode or change the screen resolution in CVGS?
A4: Use the CVGS 1.41 Video Patch for resolutions of 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768.

Q5: I get a black gap at the bottom of the screen in CVGS 1.4 what's going on?
A5: It's a bug in the version 1.4 and Connectix is aware of this problem. It's already fixed in CVGS 1.41.

Q6: Is it possible to play ISO games on CVGS?
A6: Yes you can use Daemon Tools to mount the PSX ISO as a virtual cd-rom drive.
Get it at http://www.daemon-tools.com

Q7: Why are my "original" PSX CD's ejected on CVGS?
A7: Use the CVGS ModChip patch from SunTzu7 or Morlac (for v1.41):
Patch for VGS 1.3 (DOS), Patch for VGS 1.4 (DOS) and Patch for VGS 1.41

Q8: Does CVGS work with backup CDs?
A8: Try using the CVGS ModChip patch from SunTzu7 or Morlac (for v1.41):
VGS 1.41 for Windows: Patch for VGS 1.41
VGS 1.4 for Windows: Patch for VGS 1.4 (DOS)
VGS 1.3 for Windows: Patch for VGS 1.3 (DOS)
VGS 1.4 for Mac: Patch for VGS 1.4
VGS 1.2 for Mac: Patch for VGS 1.2

Q9: Does CVGS support 3D hardware acceleration?
A9: ePSXe, PSEmu Pro and bleem! use 3D hardware acceleration, CVGS is software mode only.

Q10: I receive a VxD error. Now what?
A10: Several users have reported errors with memory modules, specially with 192MB RAM or above. Try using only 128MB RAM.

Another solution for some VxD errors is disabling the Direct3D acceleration in the Display tab of DXDiag, that is found in C:\Program Files\directx\setup. Remember to enable it again, if you plan to run other emulators or games that use Direct3D.

Other users have reported solving their problems uninstalling Nero or needed to do a dirty reinstall of Win9x. Also Voodoo 1.05.00 seems to have problems, try driver version 1.04.00 installed together with DirectX 7a.

Another tip: Checking the SYNCHRONIZE DATA TRANSFER (in device settings/ cdrom / properties) help with some problems under Windows ME.

NOTE: If your system is working fine, DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING!!!

Q11: Why do I get "The CONNECTIX VGS.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6663"?
A11: Try downloading the latest MFC42.DLL.

To replace this file with a newer version:

  1. Download and unzip the mfc4261.zip in c:\Temp
  2. Shutdown and select Restart in MS-DOS mode.
  3. From the DOS prompt type:
    copy c:\temp\mfc42.dll c:\windows\system\mfc42.dll
  4. Type EXIT and press ENTER to return to Windows

A simpler way is placing the MFC42.dll in the emulator directory.

Q12: How do I copy/delete my saved games in the memory cards?
A12: Try using ConvertM from Paul Phoenix.

Q13: My joypad isn't working with CVGS?
A13: Try using VGSJoy Debug version.

Q14: How may I speed up CVGS?
A14: Obviously with a faster hardware. But there are some speed up tips through software that may help a bit:
  • Gamespot has some tweaking tricks here.
  • Try increasing the available memory.
    You may use RamBooster
  • Try adjusting your CD performance
You may use Winboost 2000 or manually through,
    Control Panel\System\Performance\File System\CD-Rom
  • Try increasing CD cache
    You may use CD-Quick Cache
  • If you have a Voodoo card, try tweaking it:
There are some tools at www.3dfiles.com
  • Try using CVGS without any other background application.
You can try GameBoost (read the readme before using)

Q15: Any other way to speed CVGS?
A15: Some users report that turning off the sound inside some games reduce the frame skipping.

Q16: Why doesn't my Dual-Shock controller vibrate with CVGS?
A16: CVGS doesn't have force feedback implemented. I've heard that some joypads can emulate it through the volume level of the sound FX.

Q17: What is tnkXfs.dat in CVGS?
A17: tnkXfs.dat is a file created every time you run CVGS and required by the CVGS Video Patch for 800x600 and 1024x768.

This file of 1960KB (in v1.41 full) remains in your C:\Windows\Temp until you delete it.
You should not mark this file (or create one in Temp) as read only, CVGS will not work if tnkXfs.dat can't be created.

Try renaming tnkXfs.dat to tnkXfs.exe. You will discover that it gets the CVGS icon!! It seems that CVGS is compressed in some way and this file is the uncompressed one.  However tnkXfs.exe won't run if you double click it. It requires some tweak in the registry to make it work.

Another trivia note: Using a WindowSpy utility, it shows that the name of Windows Class of CVGS is "CVGS Double-Secret-Probation Mutex"
